May 26 intermediate hike Mare Island

Thanks to Marilyn and John Pahr for yet another fascinating tour of a local historical site.

A highlight for me was St. Peter’s Chapel, the oldest Navy chapel in the country, built in 1901. A docent spoke to us about the history of this beautiful redwood building and about how the 25 beautiful stained-glass windows ordered from Tiffany’s catalogue, and about Tiffany’s groundbreaking technique for adding texture to the colored glass.

Our guide pointed out that the third window on the right below was not a Tiffany Window - it was created by a company in San Francisco.

This window at the back of the chapel is also not a Tiffany window. The main difference is that all the texturing was painted onto plain colored glass then baked on, whereas Tiffany incorporated the texturing to the glass itself. Only the facial features, the hands and feet were painted on.

The front of the chapel with the docent and the organ, which is still played.

I didn’t notice that. Good catch.
